Women speaking of mirrors and prettiness make it all too clear that even for pretty women, mirrors are the foci of anxious, not gratified, narcissism. The woman who knows beyond a doubt that she is beautiful exists aplenty in male novelists’ imaginations; I have yet to find her in women’s books or women’s memoirs or in life. Women spend a lot of time looking in mirrors, but the “compulsion to visualize the self” is a phrase Moers uses of women in her chapter on Gothic freaks and horrors; the compulsion is a constant check on one’s (possible) beauty, not an enjoyment of it.
white women get so hurt when non white women talk abt european standards of beauty and realize that white women aren’t the epitome of beauty and then they go ‘wow so much for women supporting women’ like why should i support standards that made me feel ugly for the majority of my life?why should i care abt you getting upset over some text post on a website when you have a bunch of magazines that validate you?if you really believed in women supporting women you’d understand why those posts are being made and the context behind them and you’d scroll past it without adding some unneeded comment abt how your feelings are hurt but it’s very obvious you throw that phrase around to make non white women feel bad for making you feel uncomfortable and not bc you support the meaning behind it
As always I wish a lot more feminists recognised that reproductive rights is not only about the right to not have children, but also the right to have children
Access to abortion is important, but so is fighting forced sterilisation, which almost always targets marginalised groups, especially disabled women, trans women, poor women and women of colour (and lets not pretend that doesn’t factor into why the issue is looked over by more privileged feminists)
They are both issues of reproductive rights and bodily autonomy and you can not have one without the other
talking to and surrounding yourself with other gay women is so healing. discussing love and sex and attraction between women with other women who understand and relate to those topics rather than censoring your feelings and thoughts because you’re afraid of making someone uncomfortable or confused is one of the most freeing pastimes!!! lesbians understanding the intricacies of other lesbians and sharing common experiences? beautiful and therapeautic
women loving each other is not a product meant for men’s comsumption and women having sex with each other is not a product for men’s consumption and women are not a product for men’s consumption
men: women are stupid bc they like astrology and i’ll prove it by being a complete asshole to women into astrology by playing mind games n lying abt my sign multiple times to PROVE tht astrology is fake and women are stupid but hey, i got my nut so it was worth it
Everyone should be reading black women’s scholarly writing as well as social commentary in general from black women’s perspective, BUT. Not in a blood-sucking vampire way? Not whitely opining on it and using black women’s labor to adopt some guise of expertise or as fodder to formulate one’s own asinine work and extract personal gain from it. The goal must be actual understanding, compassion and respect. Is it too much to ask?
You say “All women are beautiful” but what you probably mean is “All women have value.”
And the reason you’re mixing up those two words is because you’ve been raised to believe that only beauty can confer value on women.
It was medical neglect for scientists to think they could extrapolate from cis, menopausal women to trans women as each has their own particular medical needs, glad this new study exists. Glad also that the scientists behind this aren’t stupid enough to state that these risks mean that trans women shouldn’t get hormone therapy— but rather that trans women, especially populations at higher risk of embolism or stroke (older populations and/or black trans women), ought to familiarize themselves with symptoms and insist on proper medical care, to the extent that they can given what assholes doctors generally are and how difficult it is to access competent care.
My best friend died when she was 20 from pulmonary embolism— in part because she dismissed her symptoms and didn’t go to the ER. If you ever have sudden, extreme chest pain, shortness of breath, or cough up blood please insist on a chest X-ray, especially if you take high estrogen pills.
